Since all this Web 2.0 stuff is about being social, I’m hoping this will create some interaction on my blog. This is my first attempt at this so the introduction will be a little long. Just bear with me.
I love trivia and word games and things like that, so here is some trivia for you. Below are listed ten quotations. They were spoken or written by real people and may have come from speeches, letters, memoirs, etc. None of them comes from a work of fiction. Your job is to name the person associated with each quote. While every quote is not incredibly famous, the people are, so I hope you can figure some of them out even if you don’t know them immediately.
To submit your answers just post a comment listing the numbers you think you know and your answers. Go ahead and post if you don’t have an answer to all of them. If you only know 1, 3, and 5 go ahead and just post that. Be careful not to look at any one else’s post if you don’t want an answer spoiled. Also feel free to post a favorite quotation or a mystery quotation for others.
The key is to be social and have some fun while doing so. Make a team effort if you so desire. If you like this kind of thing, or even if you detest it, tell a co-worker as I will not be self-promoting. Be sure to let me know if you think these are too hard or too easy so I can do better next time (assuming there will be enough interest for there to be a next time).
SEMI-SERIOUS NOTE: You can probably spend about two minutes with Google or ten with Bartlett’s and find all the answers. However, THAT IS LAME as it defeats the whole purpose of this activity. Please respect the integrity of this endeavor by using your own brain. If you feel that is insufficient, I believe it is within the bounds of fair play to consult a co-worker, friend, family member, or any other sentient being with which you might communicate. : )
Whew. Finally, ON TO THE QUOTATIONS.
1. “In the future everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes.”
(HINT: Campbell's soup can.)
2. “I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.”
(HINT: Train conductor for a railroad with no tracks. This is an attempt to be
clever.)
3. “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
(HINT: Old, old general. Also said "Et tu Brute?", according to Shakespeare.)
4. “If you come to a fork in he road, take it.”
(HINT: Baseball player. His name is very similar to a cartoon bear's.)
5. “I recognize there is a certain presumptuousness -- a certain AUDACITY -- to this announcement.”
(HINT: I have emphasized one word that should help with this person's identity)
6. “If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
(HINT: She was the second first-lady of our nation.)
7. "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration."
(HINT: American inventor who was granted over 1,000 patents during his life.)
8. "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."
(HINT: A U.S. president. Had a cool mustache.)
9. “My only concern was to get home after a hard day’s work.”
(This one was really hard. I'm not sure why I put it on here. It was Rosa Parks.)
10. "Sic semper tyrannis! The South is avenged."
(HINT: By South, he meant the Confederacy. He avenged it by killing someone rather important.)
BONUS (couldn’t resist): “Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.”
GOOD LUCK!

I love history and I love trivia! You picked some great quotes and the hints really helped. I think that I've got most of them but the Bonus stumped me. Here's my best attempt:
ReplyDelete1 Andy Warhol
2 Harriet Tubman? or Sojourner Truth?
3 I totally should know this one...I can't get it to come out of my brain.
4 Yogi Berra
5 Barack Obama
6 Abigail Adams
7 Thomas Edison
8 Franklin D. Roosevelt
9 John Wilkes Booth
Bonus- I didn't know this quote but I really like it. After I looked up the person, and found out who said it, I like the quote even more.
Here's my mystery quote:
"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing." (Clue: Was this playwright a man or a superman?)
Great job Kurt!
Pescadora, I love that you called him Kurt! I'm laughing so loud, you can probably hear me while making next week's schedule!
ReplyDeleteGuess I pulled a Shirley...Kirk.
ReplyDeleteSheesh. You can call me Miranda if you want to. I deserve it.
